Methodology — How we collect, anonymise, and publish gifting data

This page documents the data behind every number Bloom & Beyond by Hafsa publishes in our research section. Read it before citing us. Sources, limitations, and citation format are all disclosed below.

1. What the data is

The Pakistan Gifting Index is built from 2,760+ verified handcrafted gift orders fulfilled by Bloom & Beyond between January 2023 and March 2026. Each order represents a real transaction with a real recipient at a real Pakistani address — there are no estimated, modelled, or surveyed records in the dataset.

Orders enter the dataset only after delivery confirmation, which gives us a verified destination city and order value. Cancelled and refunded orders are excluded. The studio operates from a single Lahore location, so 100% of fulfilment originates in Lahore; the destination cities and sender countries vary widely.

2. Fields we publish

For each order we publish at most the following fields, all already in aggregated form (no row-level data is ever released):

  • Order date — month and year only, never the day
  • Order value (PKR) — bucketed into ten price bands
  • Source country — sender's country (Pakistan, UK, USA, UAE, Saudi Arabia, Canada, Australia, Other)
  • Destination city — top 10 Pakistani cities; everything else aggregated as “Other Pakistan”
  • Occasion — Eid, Wedding, Birthday, Anniversary, Corporate, Just Because
  • Product category — Bouquet, Gift Box, Hamper, Wedding Flowers, Floral Jewellery, Nikkah Card, Concierge
  • Sourcing method — Catalog, Custom, or Concierge (sourced-from-Lahore)

3. Fields we never publish

The following are present in our internal records and are never released, in any form, in any publication:

  • Sender or recipient name
  • Phone number, email, address (street level)
  • Payment method or transaction ID
  • WhatsApp message content
  • Personal photographs sent during the photo-before-dispatch step
  • Any item that could be combined with public records to re-identify a recipient

4. Anonymisation rules

Aggregation thresholds prevent re-identification:

  • Minimum cell size: 5 — any breakdown that would produce a cell with fewer than five orders is collapsed into the next-broader bucket
  • City suppression: any Pakistani city outside the top 10 by volume is reported as “Other Pakistan”
  • Date generalisation: never finer than month-and-year
  • Order value: bucketed into ten bands (PKR <1k, 1–2k, 2–3k, 3–5k, 5–7k, 7–10k, 10–15k, 15–25k, 25–50k, 50k+)
  • Source country aggregation: small-volume countries (Australia, New Zealand, Norway, etc. with under 30 orders combined) are reported as “Other diaspora”

The anonymisation script is open-source and runs deterministically on every release. Inputs are reviewed before publication; outputs are spot-checked for any remaining cell that could be combined with public information to identify a buyer.

5. Limitations

We are explicit about what this dataset is and is not:

  • Single retailer. The data reflects Bloom & Beyond customers, not the entire Pakistani gifting market. Where we report market-wide trends we say so explicitly and note our basis.
  • Lahore-skewed fulfilment. 100% of orders ship from a Lahore studio. Same-day delivery patterns therefore reflect Lahore-area logistics, not Karachi or Islamabad fulfilment realities.
  • Premium / handcrafted segment. Average order values run higher than mass-market gifting. Comparisons with mass-market prices are noted as such.
  • English-language interface. Customers reach us through WhatsApp and an English-language website. Urdu-only buyers are under-represented relative to the broader population.
  • 2023 cohort effect. Bloom & Beyond launched in 2023, so the earliest months represent a smaller customer base. We weight comparative analyses by sample size where relevant.

6. Update cadence

The Pakistan Gifting Index is published quarterly, two to four weeks after each quarter ends. Each edition supersedes nothing from prior editions — historical data is appended, never revised, unless we discover a methodology error (in which case the change is footnoted on this page).
